First it was all about detecting invisible electromagnetic waves like radio and WiFi.
Light on the other hand is also an electromagnetic wave but it is visible to us humans. Of course radio communication is best picked-up with an antenna. And in order to tell where it comes from the antenna was required to be directional, which means it detects waves best when they hit the antenna up front.
This was the first prototype towards a visualization of radio waves.
